The challenge was, how can I take all of my years of living and feeling through music, and put it into one club mix?
When I DJ I throw a lot of feelings and genres in there, so that’s what I’ve done with my fabric mix. The challenge was, how can I take all of my years of living and feeling through music, and put it into one club mix?
I’ve thrown abrasion and beauty and intensity and peace and sorrow and excitement all in there. I want to be alive and express and feel, not be limited to some little slice of what’s out there via some genre defined by kick drum spacing and bpm. So all the feelings and genres I’ve loved are in there, and I’ve made edits and bootlegs of everything to make them flow.
Sometimes when you find a piece of music it sticks with you for life….those special tracks that just get into you and you can’t stop playing. I decided to build my fabric mix around those tracks that have stuck with me over the years. fabric is a club of course, so it’s a dancefloor mix mainly. If you’ve seen me DJ will know what that involves, but if you’ve only ever listened to my releases on streaming services it might be more of a surprise.
I also worked on a Dolby Atmos version of the mix with Aneek Thapar. Atmos usually relies on having all the original parts of each piece of music to structure in the space around us, which we didn’t have with this being a Dj mix of others music. So we approach the spatial mix in a totally different way, loads of experiments with channel based effects and granular spatialisation of stereo masters alongside stem separation techniques - the Atmos mix sounds quite different to the stereo as a result, it has lots of extra layers and lots of rhythmical counterpoint straying off the original structures.
The fabric presents album is set for release on Fri 2 Oct and will be available as digital release and in Dolby Atmos surround sound format, limited edition white and clear double LP vinyl and CD.
I’ll also be playing an All Night Long DJ set at fabric on Sat 3 Oct.
