This Is A Bridge (with Sorcery)
This music/video project from Feeling is Structure was 4 years in the making. It was a process of searching for the right connections from disparate places, and making many different sorts of bridges.
It started when Chang Yeong Kim (artist name KC Yawp) got in touch to show me the posthuman themed paintings he'd been making in response to my music. Their beauty and power struck me immediately, but I didn’t know how to respond to them musically, so I asked if he could wait for me to find a solution.
The next part of the puzzle came when I was faced with a challenge with my live show, where I needed to connect drum and bass to techno seamlessly, and turned to one of my favourite artists for help, Merlin Ettore aka Sorcery. Merlin had a previous track with a special structure that allowed for the transition to function, so we set about making a new collaboration with this bridging capacity, but also as a bridge between our very different musical worlds.
By this point I had also started on my Feeling Is Structure album project, and was thinking about structural ideas I could map to music as well as visuals, so I got back in touch with KC Yawp with a challenge - can we bridge between the art forms of dance and drawing, with stop frame choreography?
At this point the music was also taking form, with both Merlin’s industrial power and Changyeong’s imagery in my mind. There’s historic symbolism in there which pushed a particular musical feeling as the chords open up to become the most intense part of the whole record, and which Changyeong and the dancers Qi Zi Yu, Kim Seok Jung, Oh Su Hui and Ha Yeon Ju responded to more viscerally than I could have imagined. They absolutely nailed it.
It’s a bridge between musical worlds, a bridge between mindsets and feelings, and a bridge between art forms, by structure.
